Are you a psychiatrist with patience and excellent communication skills? Liaison psychiatry is a new, exciting and varied sub-specialty of general psychiatry.

On a day-to-day basis, you'll be diagnosing and managing patients who have a wide-range of mental health problems. A great aspect of the role is working with people who are physically ill and the teams taking care of them. As such, your patient may have multiple, long-term chronic health conditions and you'll likely need to liaise with clinical staff across other specialities. So, for example, in emergency departments, you may need to work closely with emergency medical staff and other clinicians to assess and treat people for a wide range of conditions like alcohol- or drug-related issues, acute psychosis or self-harm. The patient may be taking various medications, so you'll need to be able to collaborate with colleagues to work out the best treatment for them.

Please be aware that a significant part of your role will be to provide informal and formal teaching and training to hospital colleagues and common mental health disorders that you might treat include:

  • acute psychosis
  • alcohol and drug addictions
  • anxiety
  • delirium
  • dementia
  • depression
  • eating disorders
  • neuropsychiatric disorders
  • perinatal mental health problems
  • self-harm

Plus, as you know, working for the NHS means that you'll have:

  • A fulfilling, full time job
  • An excellent Pension Scheme
  • NHS discounts throughout lots of shops and restuarant
  • Good holiday entitlement

Successful Liaison Doctors here, will need:

  • Excellent communication and team-working skills - you'll need to manage multidisciplinary relationships
  • Resillience - you'll need to be cool, calm and collected to work in such a high pressure environment
  • Problem-solving and diagnostic skills
  • Outstanding organisation and decision-making skills
  • First-class time and resource management skills for the benefit of patients and service users
  • Outstanding listening skills
  • Empathy, compassion and the willingness to treat people with understanding and respect
