Are you a psychiatrist with patience and excellent communication skills? Liaison psychiatry is a new, exciting and varied sub-specialty of general psychiatry.
On a day-to-day basis, you'll be diagnosing and managing patients who have a wide-range of mental health problems. A great aspect of the role is working with people who are physically ill and the teams taking care of them. As such, your patient may have multiple, long-term chronic health conditions and you'll likely need to liaise with clinical staff across other specialities. So, for example, in emergency departments, you may need to work closely with emergency medical staff and other clinicians to assess and treat people for a wide range of conditions like alcohol- or drug-related issues, acute psychosis or self-harm. The patient may be taking various medications, so you'll need to be able to collaborate with colleagues to work out the best treatment for them.
