Since 2017, an updated version of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) has been in operation across the majority of the NHS. Despite its 5+ years of use, confusion persists about its purpose and benefits. Let’s explore both in this post!

What NEWS is

NEWS measures 6 physiological data points such as heart rate, breathing patterns, and conscious level, to look for warning signs of early deterioration in patients. When implemented correctly, it vastly improves patient outcomes and helps to spot signs of illness before things become too severe.

Thousands of Lives Saved

It’s estimated that up to 1800 lives a year are saved by NEWS testing. If you’re looking for an ambulance or nursing job in the UK, it will be important to stay up-to-date with these protocols!
